Soap trade cards designed by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, circa 1876-1880 [graphic].

This set includes eleven examples of colored advertising trade cards designed by Charlotte Perkins Gilman between approximately 1876 and 1880, the majority of which were produced for the Kendall Manufacturing Company of Providence, Rhode Island. Among these are: four copies of "French Laundry," which depicts a laundress kneeling and pounding white linen; two copies of "Soapine French Laundry Soap," which has an image of a woman archer; three individual "Soapine" cards, one with a vertical image of young boy climbing a rope tethered to a star, one that features a young boy with a derby hat sitting atop an electric pole, and one showing a housemaid in blue dusting a mantel. Also included are two examples of a card produced for Curtis Davis & Company of Boston, Massachusetts for "Welcome Soap," which shows a young nurse presenting an infant to an older man. The images on the rectos of all the cards are multicolor lithographs. Six of the cards include letterpress advertising texts on the verso, while others are blank. The sizes of the cards vary slightly.
